Caring for the Course.
The 3 R’s
1. Repair Pitchmarks
Pitchmarks need to be repaired as quickly as possible before the grass roots start to die.
If you cannot find yours, please do someone else’s.
The attached shows the correct way.
2. Replace Divots
Again, grass roots will start to die quickly if a Divot is not Replaced.
Replace as much as you can into the divot, try to match the shape to the hole, and gently press it down.
3. Rake Bunkers
You should measure your actions against how you would want to find a bunker.
Take a rake into the bunker with you. So you don’t forget to rake. It also means less walking.
Rake where you hit the ball as well as all your footprints.
Raking should be thorough, ensuring the sand is left as smooth as possible without ridges and holes etc. A light drag of the rake behind you as you exit is not good enough.
As you get to the edge of the bunker push the sand away from the edge towards the middle of the bunker.
Even if you walk into a bunker to retrieve a ball, you must still rake the sand to smooth your footsteps.
Does any of the above really matter? Of course it does. If no-one cares for our course, it would soon be a mess. In any case failing to “care for the course” could result in your disqualification!
