I have been asked to give advice to Members on what to do with Bunkers during bad weather etc.

Please note, in qualifying competitions, we are not allowed to declare all bunkers GUR.  In these competitions you have the options below.

Bunker Options:

Remember to rake the bunker for the next person after retrieving your ball please

 

A Bunker is in play unless it has been marked Ground Under Repair.

 

Your options:

a.                Temporary Water (therefore Abnormal Course Conditions), free relief is allowed at the nearest point in the bunker no nearer the hole.  The original ball or another ball MUST be dropped within 1 club-length.

b.                Impossible to find area to drop? – for a Penalty of 1 stroke, you can take a drop outside the bunker – no nearer etc.

c.                 Alternatively, you can opt to take maximum available relief, which means your ball is dropped in an area where the water is not as deep, or you opt to stand in a shallower area.

 

Other Abnormal Course Conditions – Wash outs

d.                Areas where sand has washed away from the sides of a bunker.  Free relief is allowed at the nearest point in the bunker no nearer the hole.  A ball MUST be dropped within 1 club-length.

 

If none of the above are suiting you, for 2 penalty strokes you can Drop a Ball outside the bunker on a line as far back as you like using the Unplayable rule.

 

Non-qualifying, Social golf etc:

Unless marked GUR or Wash outs (as above), you can choose your best option, however, please consult your organiser.

Dear Members

Please note the following changes and additions to existing policies.

1. Club Championships Eligibility

In line with other Golf Clubs, to be eligible to win any prize in the Club Championships, a member must have completed 6 Handicap Qualifying Club Competitions in a rolling 12 month period.

We are telling you now with 6 months remaining to enable you to plan accordingly.

You will remember we promised 1 qualifying competition per month on a Tuesday.  These are in the draft 2025 Fixture List.

Obviously changes are subject to alteration by the 2025 Committee, but we hope this is the fairest way forward.

2. No Show Policy

When we introduced this Policy in 2024 we did not envisage repeat offenders or specify the duration of the warning stage.

This is the amended Policy:-

A. After failing to show for a competition without making prior contact, the member will receive a Yellow Card – this is a warning.  The Yellow Card will expire after 3 months.

B.  If during that time a 2nd No Show occurs, the member will receive a Red Card – this is a 2 week suspension from all Club Competitions.  A Red Card will expire after 3 months.

C.  If another No Show occurs during that period, the Red Card suspension is doubled (4 weeks) and so is the expiry time (6 months).  Repeat offenders may also be referred to the Disciplinary Committee.

No Shows are incredibly frustrating for lots of people, especially those in the flight, and upsetting for any reserves who could have stepped in.

It is accepted that things happen in our personal lives that mean we can no longer play, illness, car trouble etc.

What is unacceptable is not finding the time to inform the Proshop, Comp Sec or any Committee Member.  So let us know to avoid the suspensions.

Rules reminder Week 4

The KEO and Walker Cup matches take place over the next 2 Saturdays.

Whilst these are fun competitions, (life and death to some) it is worth reminding players of playing in the spirit of the game.

Matchplay is a very different format, one that very much employs tactics, but there are several things you must oot forget.

Who goes first (the ‘honour’) can be one of these: agreed by Captain, first named in the Draw or by coin toss.  You will be told for the matches.  You retain the honour until you lose a hole.

Furthest fron the flag goes first.  This is true even if one player is 10m off the green and you are on the green but 20m from the flag, you go first.  In team matchplay, the side furthest away can choose the partner who is nearer can instead go first.

There is no penalty for playing out of turn (it is not loss of hole), the opponents can choose to cancel the stroke made out of turn by the other team so they have to play again in the correct order.

Does this exist in matchplay?  Yes it does.  If your flight is clearly slow, efforts to quicken up would include even though its your honour offering the opposition play if the are ready.  Or if in a buggy offering they tee off to allow walkers to catch up.  I would not recommend this on a Par 3 though where first blood is crucial.  If it is not your honour, you cannot insist on playing first.

You must be clear when giving the next stroke/hole/match.  If one partner gives the other cannot disagree.  The opponents cannot reject a concession made to them.  You cannot ask for a concession or glare in such a way to obtain a concession.  It is the absolute discretion of the side whether they give or not.

You must agree before play what strokes are given or received.  It is then your responsibility to know which hole your opponent gets or gives a stroke.

No matter the score of the match, remain polite and friendly.  You all know what is expected.
