He started a new life working in the open on golf courses.   After 5 years working at Aphrodite Hills he joined the dedicated team at Secret Valley Golf Course about 2 years ago.  SVGC offered an opportunity to develop and deepen his expertise; learning the intricate science  required for maintaining the fairways and greens throughout the year.  Now, he is a key part of the team and he is studying course management, earning professional certificates whilst mastering the technical complexities of turf care and the necessary equipment required.

Each season brings its own challenges: different grasses, complicated irrigation needs, precise fertiliser schedules, and pest control.  Do you know that 20 tests are required on each green to monitor water levels – a precise routine ensuring perfection on the greens.  Although some of the chemicals used on the course have an unpleasant smell, all are carefully chosen to be non-toxic. 

In the summer months work for the green staff begins at 0530.  On arrival the staff check the notice board to find their assigned tasks for the day. Tarlochan admits that one of the most dreaded jobs is tending the bunkers.   As the club approaches major competitions, such as the club championship, special care is essential for the greens. Time is dedicated for extra mowing, rolling, and checking ball speed by using a special ball connected to an app to ensure faster greens. 

Secret Valley is home to many snakes and the green staff regularly come across them, but golfers often fail to understand just how many snakes are in this area.  If you go into the rough to search for a lost ball please make sure you make a noise, stamp your feet, as snakes feel the vibration from sounds and will move away.

Tarlochan is very appreciative of the beautiful environment in which he works and says the 11th is his favourite hole, where the lake attracts a wealth of wildlife.
