Results – Inter Club Match – Aphrodite Hills v CSVG on Wed 17 Jun 26

The final score on the day was 6 1/2 to 3 1/3 in favour of Aphrodite Hills GC.
 
Over the 2 competitions, Columbia Secret Valley won 11 points to 9 points.
 
The match at Aphrodite Hills was played in perfect golfing weather, sunny, warm and with very little breeze. The course itself was in very good condition, the greens were fast and smooth, the fairway lies were superb and the rough was consistent and very playable. In terms of the weather and the course, a glorious day to be playing.
 
The Aphrodite members were fair and gracious hosts and for many, it was an opportunity to renew friendships from past matches. After the match, everyone was treated to a super lunch and the odd libation. The conversations then flowed around missed opportunities or those who had such luck they needed to buy a lottery ticket immediately! The sound of laughter summed up the essence of Inter Club matches, friendly sporting rivalry playing the game we all love.
 
Well done to all those who represented Secret Valley over the two legs of the Inter Club match against Aphrodite Hills….a well earned victory!

Reminder – Charity Quiz Night at CSVG on Fri 19 Jun 26

REMINDER – CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT AT COLUMBIA SECRET VALLEY GOLF CLUB

The next charity quiz night will take place on Friday 19th June, starting at 7pm.
This will be the last Quiz for the summer, as renovations are due to start
shortly in the Clubhouse

All proceeds from the night will go to the St.Michael’s Hospice in Paphos
The Quizmaster on the night will be Paul Skinner , and the maximum per team
will be 6 people
Please contact myself at [email protected] if you can attend and the
number attending. If you have not enough to fill a table, that can be arranged
prior to the quiz.
Food will be available in the Clubhouse before the quiz, up until 6.00 pm. But
anyone wishing to eat, MUST pre-book with myself. Please email me, and I will
send out the special menu for the evening

Farewell from Joanna

Dear Club Members,

The time has come to conclude my journey with the club after many years of working together and sharing so many memorable moments.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people, building great relationships, and sharing countless memorable moments both on and off the course.
I would like to sincerely thank all club members for your support, trust, and respect throughout all these years. It has truly been a pleasure working with you and being part of the club.
I would also like to express my gratitude to my colleagues and the entire team I had the opportunity to work with. Their professionalism, support, and cooperation have always been greatly appreciated.
I wish all club members continued success, enjoyable games, and many great rounds ahead.

Green Keeper – Tarlochan Singh

Last week I spent a very enlightening hour talking with Tarlochan Singh who comes from the  Punjab region in Northern India.  Over 20 years ago Tarlochan left his homeland, and began a new life as a cook in Cyprus. For years he delighted  locals and visitors with curries, Chinese food and Mexican specialties in Paphos.  However, the pressures of the kitchen began to affect his health and Tarlochan sought a new path – one that would bring fresh air and a connection to nature.  

He started a new life working in the open on golf courses.   After 5 years working at Aphrodite Hills he joined the dedicated team at Secret Valley Golf Course about 2 years ago.  SVGC offered an opportunity to develop and deepen his expertise; learning the intricate science  required for maintaining the fairways and greens throughout the year.  Now, he is a key part of the team and he is studying course management, earning professional certificates whilst mastering the technical complexities of turf care and the necessary equipment required.

Each season brings its own challenges: different grasses, complicated irrigation needs, precise fertiliser schedules, and pest control.  Do you know that 20 tests are required on each green to monitor water levels – a precise routine ensuring perfection on the greens.  Although some of the chemicals used on the course have an unpleasant smell, all are carefully chosen to be non-toxic. 
In the summer months work for the green staff begins at 0530.  On arrival the staff check the notice board to find their assigned tasks for the day. Tarlochan admits that one of the most dreaded jobs is tending the bunkers.   As the club approaches major competitions, such as the club championship, special care is essential for the greens. Time is dedicated for extra mowing, rolling, and checking ball speed by using a special ball connected to an app to ensure faster greens. 
Secret Valley is home to many snakes and the green staff regularly come across them, but golfers often fail to understand just how many snakes are in this area.  If you go into the rough to search for a lost ball please make sure you make a noise, stamp your feet, as snakes feel the vibration from sounds and will move away.
Tarlochan is very appreciative of the beautiful environment in which he works and says the 11th is his favourite hole, where the lake attracts a wealth of wildlife. 
Members at CSVGC are extremely appreciative of the work carried out by the entire green keeping team. 
I am especially grateful to Mark for allowing me the time and opportunity to talk with Tarlochan.  Their dedication makes our course an absolute gem in Cyprus.
